Sadly, Peter is retired. His life as a
stud dog came to a halt before his career had even
really begun. A routine semen collection the day he became a Champion
indicated an
extremely low sperm count with only debris and immature sperm evident. I
hardly
remember the rest of the afternoon, but I do know Laurel and I cried
most of the way
home
I vowed to do everything in my power to make this right.
Before we
informed the
owners of girls on his waiting list, I took him to
Dr. Heather Steyn, VCA Ft. Collins Animal Hospital.
She specializes in reproduction
issues and is both a fellow exhibitor, but one
smart cookie.
After months of tests,
treatments, testicular biopsies, prayers, and lots of
bills, we decided to recognize the truth
of the matter. He would never be
the sire of great silver Champion Poodles
to come.
With no mature sperm and no definitive final answer to his
infertility, we believe he suffered
an undiagnosed infection as a young dog that
damaged his reproductive system.
Peter made many friends during his short show career, and even now, more than 4
years
after his retirement, I have total strangers stop me to ask about him. I never
met these folks,
but they certainly remembered Peter. I appreciate their care and
the memories we
share when people stop me, but its always a sad reminder of what might have been.
So now the question is why is he still on the Stud Dog page?
The answer is easy - I just can't bear to take him off.
Dogs make you humble in so many ways and this is a reminder that you have to
keep a tight
rein
on your hopes and dreams until they're darn well in your hands. One day
there will
be another
handsome man to post here, but until then, this is Peter's page. |
